As 2014 draws to a close, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of the Willoughby residents for their tremendous support, and to look back at some of the things we have achieved this year.
I continue to be thrilled to represent you as Willoughby Mayor and consider some of the highlights of the past eleven months (three as Acting Mayor and eight as your popularly elected Mayor) include:
- renewed focus on sport and recreation in the city, with work close to completion on the Thompson Park synthetic surface and a development application underway for the Willoughby Park upgrade;
- initial community consultation completed regarding options for Northbridge Plaza carpark upgrade and city wide traffic management; and
- a major service review undertaken at Council in order to improve efficiencies in the organisation.
We have also put in train plans to address the funding shortfall that threatens Willoughby’s ability to maintain our infrastructure, including stormwater, roads, footpaths and parks; and are very close to appointing a new General Manager to lead Council’s executive team into a new era.
As you will be aware, these achievements require the support of full Council. The 12 elected Councillors who represent residents across all four wards, have worked hard in your interests this year. Indeed, the full Council is actively looking at our options should the State Government continue to push for Council amalgamations post the State election in March 2015.
Finally, I would like to say that I continue to be amazed at the diversity of our community, the way we support each other in good times and bad, and in the beauty and amenity of the neighbourhoods we live in.
Thank you, and on behalf of myself and my family, we wish you a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Merry Christmas!
